Standard 4: Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments

Standard 4.1

Support student participation

Having students work in small groups, of 4-5 students is an excellent way to support student participation. The role of each member of the group is defined and can change over time so that all members of group have opportunity to fulfill various roles. Groups can be given varied tasks and student ability is varied within each group. For example, students create a blog for sharing the ideas/findings and present the contribution of each group by recording podcasts uploaded onto the blog. This collaboration increases students awareness of other concepts and promotes Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development in learning by giving students the opportunity to learn from each other.
